If I had inherited my mother's natural ability to guilt trip anyone (even the pets), I could get her to keep her hardwood floors.
My parents recently decided it would be a marvelous idea to get rid of their 30-year-old carpeting in their house. In the oldest part of the house, they found hardwood floors. Sounds like a good sanding and a varnishing or a lime-waxing and they'd be wonderful. It just seems like an injustice to me to cover over hardwood floors with wall-to-wall anything. Mom mentioned in the course of the discussion that they probably will sell the house when she retires. I tried to get her to realize hardwood floors can be a great selling point, too. Maybe she'll realize that someday.
I guess I'll have to tell her, from now on, when she says her favorite phrase, "I just can't have anything nice anymore", that "It's because you covered over those hardwood floors."
